Smoke from an Israeli strike rises over Gaza City on Thursday, July 24, 2014. Israeli tanks and warplanes bombarded the Gaza Strip on Thursday as Hamas militants stuck to their demand for the lifting of an Israeli and Egyptian blockade in the face of U.S. efforts to reach a cease-fire.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip — Israeli tank shells hit a compound housing a U.N. school in the Gaza Strip on Thursday, killing at least 15 people and wounding dozens who were seeking shelter from fierce clashes on the streets outside, Palestinian officials said, as Israel pressed forward with its 17-day war against the territory's Hamas rulers.

Pools of blood stained the school courtyard in the northern town of Beit Hanoun, amid scattered books and belongings. There was a large scorch mark in the courtyard marking the place where one of the tank shells hit. Dozens of people, including children were wheeled into a nearby hospital as sirens wailed.

The strike occurred during a day of heavy fighting throughout the coastal territory. Israel says the war is meant to halt rocket fire from Palestinian militants in Gaza and destroy a sophisticated network of cross-border tunnels. International efforts to bring about a truce appeared elusive, with the violence continuing and Hamas reiterating its demand for a cease-fire that a crippling Egyptian and Israeli blockade on Gaza be lifted.

Gaza health official Ashraf al-Kidra said the dead and injured in the school compound were among hundreds of people seeking shelter from heavy fighting in the area.

It was the fourth time a U.N. facility has been hit in fighting between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza, since the Israeli operation began July 8. The Palestinian refugee agency has said it has found militant rockets inside two vacant schools but the target of Thursday's strike was not immediately clear.

“Gideon Levy, a prominent leftist Israeli columnist, said [Israel’s] longstanding ‘dehumanization of the Palestinians’ has resulted today in a ‘total lack of any kind of empathy’ with them.” -- Bloomberg Businessweek (7-23-14)
Ironically, this is how Hitler was able to openly attack the Jews in Germany -- by first dehumanizing them.

Pobucker, it sounds like you are calling for genocide? Your ignorance is frightening. As usual, a small handful of troublemakers are causing many innocent lives to be lost. History will repeat itself until the world is rid of ignorant people.

FollowTheMoney, you miss one small but very important point, they, the citizens elected Hamas into power. Also, if a "small handful of troublemakers are causing many innocent lives to be lost.", one would think that the vast majority of those citizens would stop the madness themselves. Your ignorance is frightening.

Israel seems very effecting in finishing what Hamas starts. You'd think the idiots in the Hamas leadership would get a clue.

DontDrinkDatKoolAid, you should follow your own advice. If you only listen to one side of the story, it does seem very clear. If you can have an open mind and really listen to both sides of the story, without prejudice, it isn't clear at all. There are ignorant people all over the world, including the Gaza Strip, and they cause much harm to our earth and our own race, the human race. My advice, which you can and most likely will ignore, is to focus more on improving yourself, be more open minded, and really try to understand how and why things are the way they are before making judgments. I wish you good luck.
