Plasencia moving up in Canada

Arkansas junior Regina Plasencia is tied for 11th, while junior Gabriela Lopez remains in the top seven after Wednesday's second round of the Canadian Women's Amateur Championship in Woodstock, Ontario.

Plasencia, who started the day tied for 24th place, shot a second-round 70. Lopez struggled, shooting a four-over 74 to finish at 142. She is five strokes off the lead.

The field will be cut to the low 70 scores and ties today, with the final round set for Friday.

Bauxite promotes Guthrie

Bauxite has named Mike Guthrie as its interim coach for the 2014 season, Athletic Director Doug Quinn said Wednesday.

Guthrie was the Miners' defensive coordinator last season under Shane Clancy.

Clancy resigned from Bauxite last week to take the head coaching position at Bethel Middle School in Bryant. He went 5-35 in four seasons at Bauxite.

Guthrie was previously head coach at Lincoln and Cedarville. He has also served as associate head coach at Van Buren in 2011 and defensive coordinator at North Pulaski in 2012.

Bauxite opens the season at Pulaski Robinson on Sept. 5.

Arkansas hires assistant coach

Arkansas Coach Mike Larabee announced on Wednesday the addition of Randi Davis as an assistant coach.

Davis will serve as the Razorbacks' pitching coach. She brings 12 years of softball experience, including coaching at the NCAA Division I and III levels and Gold level, private instruction and consulting with various universities.

UALR adds Garcia to women's staff

UALR has hired Bri Garcia as an assistant coach on the women's team, led by Coach Adrian Blewitt.

Garcia was an assistant coach at Nebraska last season. She played collegiately at Penn State and also has assistant coaching experience with the U.S. Olympic Development Program and at summer camps at Penn State.

Garcia helped lead Penn State to the national championship game in 2012 while also winning five consecutive Big Ten Conference championships.
