Arkansas Achievers

Maury Mitchell of Toronto has received an Honor Award in the University of Arkansas Fay Jones School of Architecture’s annual Alumni Awards for Arpent, his master plan for Canada’s University of Manitoba campus in Winnipeg. Mitchell graduated in 2003 with a bachelor of architecture and works at Janet Rosenburg & Studio in Toronto.

Cicely Shannon of Texarkana has been selected as a 2014 Harry S. Truman Scholar and will receive $30,000 for graduate studies. She is a junior economics major with a concentration in international finance and economic policy in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas.

Alejandra Gonzalez of Rogers, a senior apparel studies student in the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food, and Life Sciences at the University of Arkansas, has placed first in the merchandising poster board competition at the Fashion Group International of Dallas Career Day. She received a $500 scholarship for finishing first.

Hannah Butler of Batesville has received an AXA Achievement national scholarship worth $15,000. She already had received a $10,000 scholarship from the group for winning at the state level. She organized a “Finger-Print-a-Thon” to help locate missing children.

The Jacksonville Fire Department announced awards at its first awards ceremony.

Jeff Singleton was named 2013 Firefighter of the Year.

Drew Cargile was named 2013 Paramedic of the Year.

Lt. Jason Riggs was named 2013 Fire Officer of the Year.

Capt. David Jones received the John M. Vanderhoof Award for Outstanding Performance.

Daniel Dimatteo was awarded a Certificate of Merit.

James Hurley received the Firefighters Life Saving Award.

Jason Bowmaster received the Fire Department Purple Heart.
