BASKETBALL

ASU’s Boyer gets extension

Arkansas State women’s basketball Coach Brian Boyer completed the best of his 15 seasons in March, and on Saturday was awarded with a contract extension and a raise.

ASU announced it has extended Boyer’s contract through the 2017 season, which would be his 18th season with the Red Wolves. ASU finished 22-12 last season, won the Sun Belt Conference regular-season title and reached the final of the conference tournament before losing to Western Kentucky. The Red Wolves earned a berth in the WNIT, where they lost to Texas-El Paso in the first round.

Boyer will be paid $105,306 per year, up from $85,729 last year.

“I am humbled and grateful for our administration’s belief in me and continued investment in our program,” Boyer said. “I feel very good about the state of our basketball program right now.”

Boyer will receive the line-item maximum authorized by the state of Arkansas. According to the Arkansas Department of Higher Education, the line item maximum for an ASU head coach is $105,306 for the 2014-2015 academic year.

Boyer is 248-212 in 15 seasons at ASU.

“Due to the regular season Sun Belt conference championship and the talent returning I believe it warranted that coach Boyer be rewarded with a new three-year contract for continued growth in our women’s basketball program,” ASU Athletic Director Terry Mohajir said in a statement. “This is a great testament to the ladies on the team and the hard work and determination that they have put in to achieve their success.”

FISHING

Arkansas wins FLW college event

Arkansas, represented by Jonny Schultz of Maumelle and Sam Horn of Fort Smith, won the FLW College Fishing Southern Conference tournament on Lake Dardanelle with a 5-bass limit of 19-pounds, 5 ounces.

The victory earned the club $2,000 and advanced it to the FLW College Fishing Southern Conference Invitational tournament on Sam Rayburn Reservoir in Texas.

“We grew up around these parts,” Horn said. “We knew the summer patterns and we knew to have a shot at winning you had to be out deep.”

Schultz said, “We rotated through four spots today and we knew we had potential and we happened to catch fish off all four of them.”

Finishing second was Stephen F. Austin’s team of Shelby Hutchens and Owen Best, who caught five bass for 14-13. LSU-Shreveport was third with 14-6.
