CLINTON SCHOOL RECEPTION

Young African leaders near end of 6-week visit to state

Twenty-five young African leaders were honored at a July 17 reception in Sturgis Hall of the Clinton School of Public Service. The group members -- who range in age from 25 to 35 and come from various African countries -- spent six weeks studying at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. The reception followed a day of activities at the Clinton School, where the leaders met with faculty and staff to discuss public service and philanthropy.

The group is part of the Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, the new flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative, begun in 2010. The Arkansas visitors -- who included a best-selling author, member of Parliament, a medical doctor, a nonprofit founder, university lecturers, a high school instructor, and more -- were among 500 participants. These men and women participated in a training program focusing on one of three areas, business and entrepreneurship, civic leadership, and public management, with a goal of providing training and guidance that the participants can apply in their home countries.

The program culminates with a summit of all 500 fellows in Washington, continuing through Thursday.
