• President Barack Obama will rename the Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, a program designed to foster a new generation of African leaders, after former South African President Nelson Mandela, the White House said.

• Junior Bishop, 25, a Brooklyn, N.Y., man who was dressed as Spider-Man, was arrested and accused of slugging a police officer who told him to stop harassing tourists in Times Square.

• Patsy Maciel, a Humble, Texas, woman whose son, Lance Cpl. Fred Maciel, was killed in 2005 in Iraq, received a tribute flag -- signed by about two dozen other Marines -- that Lanie and Walter Brown found at a Texas flea market.

• Zachary L. Smith, 25, of Antioch, Tenn., was charged with filing a false report and tampering with evidence after he called 911 and threatened to blow up a runway at the Nashville International Airport, police said.

• Pope Francis marked the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War I with a plea for people to "not repeat the mistakes of the past," urging them during a prayer in Vatican City to embrace dialogue to overcome conflicts.

• Sigmar Gabriel, the vice chancellor and economy minister of Germany, said that Europe should take aim at rich businessmen who support Russia's government as Europe increases pressure on Moscow over its actions in Ukraine.

• Alecsys Brown, 16, a rising senior at Douglas S. Freeman High School in Richmond, Va., is one of more than 1,200 students, alumni and parents who are trying to revive the school's historic mascot, a Confederate soldier known as the "Rebel Man."

• Katherine Main, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department, said 13 people were struck by lightning, and one died, on Venice Beach boardwalk during a series of thunderstorms, while the Los Angeles County sheriff's office said a 14th person was struck on Catalina Island.

• Darnell Varnado, 28, and Shantay Varnado, 29, a Mississippi couple, were arrested on one count each of possessing stolen property after police said they were found living with their two children and the children's grandmother in an overdue rental truck.

• Lucy Coffey, 108, the nation's oldest living female World War II veteran, finally made it to Washington, D.C., to see the World War II Memorial and the Women in Military Service for America Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery.
