Neighbors, victims' advocates mourn 'senseless' slaying of LR woman

A woman who was shot and killed outside her apartment Saturday night had just gotten off work, a neighbor said Monday.

Tanuyna Wilson, 44, worked as a supervisor and often filled in as a manager at the City Market at 4110 W. 12th St., just blocks away from her West 11th Street home.

According to Wilson's neighbor, Laura Duarte, Wilson got home from work that night and, as was a part of her weekend evening routine, was getting set to drive to Stuttgart to pick up her longtime boyfriend.

Neighbors, however, reported hearing two gunshots at 9:41 p.m., followed by the screams of a woman.

One neighbor, who asked not to be identified for her safety, said she didn't think much of the gunshots.

But then she heard the screams, like something "out of a horror movie," and walked toward Wilson's 3723 W. 11th St. apartment building.

Wilson was lying in the jagged gravel easement outside her complex. She was dead, according to the witness, and had a "surprised" look on her face.

She was taken to UAMS Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead from her wounds.

On Monday, the spot where she fell was decorated with candles, which sat beneath a stuffed animal and flowers strung along a chain-link fence.

It was there that neighbors met with victims' advocates from Stop the Violence to beg the community to help solve Wilson's case and to come forward with information, anonymously if need be.

"Someone out there knows who did this; someone is talking about it," said Benny Johnson, founder of the organization. "We need to stomp out this 'no snitching' thing ... If you [don't come forward with information], you're just as bad as the one who pulled the trigger."

Johnson, group president Walter Crockran and other advocates were joined by Little Rock Police Department spokesman Lt. Sidney Allen, who emphasized that detectives would treat anonymous information sensitively and that any seemingly "insignificant" detail from that night could help break the case.

As of right now, according to police, there isn't much information available for investigators.

One neighbor said she spotted the gunman walking with a "quick step" north on Oak Street, away from the apartment and possibly toward a parked car.

She described the suspect as a 5-foot-6, 180-pound black man in his late 20s or 30s. He wore dark slacks, a white button-down shirt and a dark-colored hat, police said.

Without more suspect information, Allen was unable to cite a possible motive or even to say if the suspect or victim knew one another.

Wilson was only the second slaying in Little Rock this month but marked the 30th killing this year, 10 ahead of the number at this point last year, which ended with 36 killings.

Wilson leaves behind a grown daughter, who lives in California, and a grown son, according to Duarte.

Wilson, Duarte said, was also a grandmother.

"She was trying to do right," she said. "She got her life together."

According to Duarte, Wilson was three years sober, a church regular, and, with her job at the nearby City Market, was known in the neighborhood.

"She never hurt anybody. She went to church. She just got a new car," Duarte said. "It's just senseless."
