LITTLE ROCK — Arkansas Land Commissioner John Thurston has been elected to head a 23-state association group of land commissioners.

Thurston's office announced Monday that he was elected president of the Western States Land Commissioners Association at the group's summer conference in Bismark, N.D. The group was created in 1949 and is the second-largest land management group in the country, according to a release from his office.

Thurston is a Republican who was first elected to the office in 2010 and is seeking re-election this fall. He is being challenged by Democrat Mark Robertson and Libertarian nominee Elvis D. Presley.
