Trial to begin in death of 3-year-old in Memphis

MEMPHIS — A jury has been selected in the trial of a Memphis man charged with fatally beating his 3-year-old son and dumping him into a trash bin two years ago.

Maurice Brown Sr. has pleaded innocent in the death of Maurice Brown Jr. The trial is expected to start Tuesday before a 12-person jury selected Monday.

Brown told police on July 1, 2012, that he had awakened from a nap in his apartment and found that his front door was open and his son was missing. Authorities began an intensive search, using police dogs and a helicopter. The boy's body was found in a Dumpster-type trash bin two days later.

An autopsy showed that the boy died of blunt force trauma. An affidavit showed police found blood in the apartment.

Brown Sr. has been charged with murder in perpetration of aggravated child abuse.
