2 file in Alexander, Bryant

An Alexander man has filed to be a candidate for the city's mayor.

Corliss "Jerry" Ball, 82, who is retired, is running for the position -- which pays $20,160 annually. Michelle Hobbs, who currently holds the position, was appointed after a 2012 recall election that booted former Mayor Paul Mitchell from the office.

"I watched [the city] kind of go downhill over the last few years," Ball said. "I just feel like I can do something, you know."

Several people have encouraged him to run, Ball said, adding that he thinks the city needs a full-time mayor. As of closing Tuesday, no one else has filed for that position. The deadline is noon Aug. 15.

Attorney Doug Mays, 67, on Monday turned in paperwork to be a candidate for the Bryant city attorney. The position is returning to an elected one in the November election, after no one had run for that office during the last election.

The current city attorney, Chris Madison, cannot run for the spot because he does not live in the city limits. A city ordinance sets the city attorney's salary at $10,200 a year, though the incoming elected official can petition the council to change that amount.

The terms for Alexander mayor and Bryant city attorney are for four years.
