3 more Civil War markers approved

Three Civil War markers have been approved in Faulkner, Izard and Saline counties, the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission announced this week.

The Civil War Sesquicentennial Historical Markers program helps to tell stories about Arkansas communities and the Civil War's effect on them. The commission works with local partners who submit applications for historical markers to be placed in their areas in conjunction with the war's 150th anniversary.

In Faulkner County, the marker will be placed at Cadron Settlement Park in Conway, near the historical community of Cadron, the site of frequent ferry crossings during the Civil War. The marker is sponsored by the Faulkner County Historical Society.

In Izard County, a marker to commemorate the Wild Haws expedition of March 10-12, 1864, will be placed at County Roads 9 and 57 at LaCrosse. The marker is sponsored by the Izard County Historical and Genealogical Society.

And a marker sponsored by the Saline County History and Heritage Society will be placed on the Saline County Courthouse grounds in Benton.

To date, 88 markers have been approved in 55 counties. The commission's goal is to have a Civil War Sesquicentennial Historical Marker in each of Arkansas' 75 counties by the end of the sesquicentennial observance in 2015.
