Arkansas State University closes outreach center

JONESBORO — Arkansas State University is closing its decades-old Continuing Education and Community Outreach Center.

The Jonesboro Sun reported that Vice Chancellor and Provost Lynita Cooksey announced the closure Tuesday.

She said the university is attempting to streamline operations and reduce duplicated work. She said other departments will absorb the functions of the center and no services will be cut.

It's unclear if the closure will result in layoffs. Cooksey said the nine staff members were offered or reassigned to vacant positions at the university.

The center had operated for more than 36 years under different names. It offered online noncredit programs, community education, summer camps and youth programs.
