Forum to show off new center's design

Little Rock officials will hold an open house and town forum Thursday so the public can review the design concept for a new community center.

The meeting about the planned West Central Community Center is scheduled for 6-7:30 p.m. at 8616 Colonel Glenn Road, home of the Rosedale Optimist Club.

The Optimist Club building will be torn down and the West Central Community Center will take its place, said Luis Gonzalez, the city's communications and marketing manager. The center will include a designated area for the Optimist Club for its meetings, he said.

The city estimates that it can open the new facility -- which would be about 23,000 square feet -- in the latter part of 2015. Once the design concept is approved, Gonzalez said, construction would take about 10 months.

The new community center has a budget of about $6 million, with funding coming from the three-eighths percent capital portion of the 1 percentage point sales-tax increase approved by voters in 2011, Gonzalez said. The facility will be staffed with additional personnel.

At Thursday's meeting, memorabilia from the Rosedale Optimist Club will be on display and a tour of the facility will be provided.
