LR crash kills 1; brakes cited

A pickup towing a trailer careened through a Little Rock intersection Monday afternoon after the driver said the truck's brakes failed, slamming into a metal pole and killing its passenger.

The crash occurred shortly after 2 p.m. at Chicot and Mabelvale Cutoff roads.

The driver of the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado, John Fore of Little Rock, was driving south on Chicot after he left the University of Arkansas at Little Rock with a "pile of tree limbs," police said. As he approached Mabelvale Cutoff, Fore told officers, he "pressed the brakes to the floor, but the vehicle never slowed down."

Fore, trying to avoid other vehicles in the intersection, swerved to the left and struck the pole. The truck also sideswiped another vehicle before coming to rest.

The identity of his passenger, who died at the scene, wasn't available Tuesday afternoon. Fore was treated at UAMS Medical Center for a laceration on his left leg and released, police said.

The driver of the vehicle that was sideswiped, Bobby Cates of Little Rock, was cited for driving on a suspended license and lacking proof of insurance.

The accident remained under investigation Tuesday. "Any other charges that may be filed as a result of this accident are pending," according to the accident report.
