LR police set meeting series with new chief

A series of public meetings with Little Rock's new police chief will be held across the city, beginning next week.

The public meetings with Chief Kenton Buckner will be held over a three-week period in each of the city's seven wards.

The purpose is to give the public a chance to hear about the new chief's focus on "deterrence and preventive intervention" as an approach to crime control, City Manager Bruce Moore said in a news release Tuesday.

The meeting schedule is:

• Monday: Ward 2, Willie L. Hinton Neighborhood Resource Center, 3805 West 12th St.

• Aug. 7: Ward 4, McDermott Elementary School, 1200 Reservoir Road

• Aug. 8: Ward 1, Dunbar Community Center, 1001 W. 16th St.

• Aug. 11: Ward 6, Centre at University Park, 6401 W. 12th St.

• Aug. 13: Ward 7, David O. Dodd Elementary School, 6423 Stagecoach Road.

• Aug. 18: Ward 3, Westover Hills Presbyterian Church, 6400 Richard B. Hardie Drive.

• Aug. 21: Ward 5, Roosevelt Thompson Library, 38 Rahling Circle.

Each meeting will begin at 6 p.m.

Buckner, 45, became chief on June 30. He came to Little Rock from Louisville, Ky., where he was an assistant chief at that city's Metropolitan Police Department for the past three years.
