NLR schools OKs provider of substitutes

The North Little Rock School Board on Monday made official its selection of PCMI Staffing Services of Portland, Mich., to provide substitute-teacher services during the forthcoming 2014-15 school year.

The board authorized the change in the substitute provider earlier this month but wanted to act on the final contract.

PCMI will be responsible for virtually all aspects of hiring, supervising and paying qualified substitute teachers for North Little Rock school.

The cost to the district for the service is 23 percent of the gross pay per substitute employee. The district's recently approved daily rate of pay for substitute teachers ranges from $60 to $95, depending upon whether a substitute teacher has a college degree and/or a state teacher's license.

A total of six companies submitted bids to provide the services at a cost of 23 percent to 36 percent over the daily rate of substitute teacher pay, Brian Brown, the district's director of finance, told the board at a special meeting Monday.

The district in 2013-14 used Sub-Teach USA of Paragould to provide the service.

Also on Monday, the board announced plans to hold a work session at 9 a.m. Saturday,on the proposed 2014-15 budget, curriculum plans and facilities.
