Scholarships claim the title for foundation's fundraiser

Miss Arkansas Amy Crain, along with 46 contestants for Miss Arkansas 2014, mingled with guests May 18 at Spikes and Stilettos, a pre-party for the fifth annual Miss Arkansas Scholarship Foundation Golf Tournament at Pleasant Valley Country Club.

Almost 200 guests, including golfers and tournament sponsors, enjoyed a buffet, cocktails and silent and live auctions. Entertainment was by the band Riverbilly, which donated a performance to the live auction that sold for $3,500.

Guests also included four former Miss Arkansas winners -- Jessie Ward Bennett (2001), Kristen Glover (2011), Katie Bailey Harris (2007) and Sloane Roberts (2012) -- and professional golfer Christina Lecuyer. Foundation board member Susie Morgan was event chairman.

The scholarship foundation is a registered 501(c)3, while the pageant is a registered 501(c)4. The first IRS designation is for nonprofits whose aim is charity, while the second is for nonprofits that promote social welfare.

Each year, the Miss Arkansas Scholarship Foundation disburses about $80,000.

Spikes and Stilettos and the golf tournament, the foundation's chief annual fundraiser, netted more $100,000 for the Miss Arkansas Scholarship Foundation.

The pageant will be June 15-21 in Hot Springs.
