3 of 4 Fort Smith posts unopposed

Mayor, 2 running for city director seats face no challengers

FORT SMITH -- Three of the four races in this year's Fort Smith city director and mayoral elections were decided Thursday when only one candidate filed for those positions.

Mayor Sandy Sanders will get another four-year term for the position he won in 2010 by defeating longtime Mayor Ray Baker.

Position 6 at-large City Director Kevin Settle also will get a second four-year term.

Former District 65 state Rep. Tracy Pennartz will be Position 5 at-large director. Pennartz served two terms in the Arkansas House of Representatives. She will succeed incumbent City Director Pam Weber, who announced earlier she would not run for re-election.

Former City Director Don Hutchings and retired Social Security Administration employee Sherry Toliver will face each other in the Nov. 4 general election for the Position 7 at-large seat on the Board of Directors.

Hutchings, pastor of Evangel Temple in Fort Smith, served on the city board representing Ward 3 from 2009-2012.

Toliver retired from the Social Security Administration in 2004 after 28 years. She retired last year from a position as executive director of the Fort Smith Area Community Foundation.

The winner of the Position 7 race will succeed Philip Merry, who decided not to run for re-election.

The mayor and at-large terms on the Board of Directors expire Dec. 31. Pennartz and the winner of the Position 7 election will take office Jan. 1.
