Improvements to highways in St. Francis and Woodruff counties will require lane closures starting today, officials say.

Liquid asphalt and pea gravel will be used to seal cracks and provide a durable driving surface along Arkansas 145 in Woodruff County and Arkansas 261, Arkansas 38 and Arkansas 50 in St. Francis County, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said in a news release.

Lanes along five miles of Arkansas Highway 145 in Woodruff County along U.S. 64B South will be closed Monday through June 16 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, weather permitting.

In St. Francis County, lane closures will begin June 9 for 4 1/2 miles along Arkansas 261 from Horton to Caldwell, for two miles along Arkansas 38 from U.S. 70 to Widener, and two miles along Arkansas 50 from Madison to Widener, the highway department said. The lane closures will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays through June 16.

Officials said drivers are encouraged to slow to 25 mph during the work to avoid glass breakage from gravel kicked up by vehicles traveling too fast for conditions.
