GREERS FERRY — A day of community fun to start the summer is coming to Greers Ferry, and organizers said they hope a positive turnout makes the day an annual event.

June 14 is the City of Greers Ferry’s Day of Special Events, including a 4K run/walk, a picnic in the city park with entertainment and the Lighted Boat Parade Contest at the end of the night.

“We just want people to come out and have fun,” Greers Ferry Chamber of Commerce President JoAnn Wanat said.

Wanat said the events are an effort of several entities to promote the city.

“What we’re trying to do is get the city, the Greers Ferry A&P Commission and the chamber to work together,” she said. “We also knew the Greers Ferry First Assembly of God church was thinking about doing a race, so we talked to them, and they decided to do it on that same day.”

Greers Ferry First Assembly of God will be raising money for an upcoming mission trip with a 4K run/walk in Greers Ferry City Park.

“We have an international mission team that has been to Ecuador and Wisconsin and Chicago,” mission team member Katie Smith said. “We are planning a trip to South America for 2015, so we’re raising money to keep the cost down so more people can go.”

Smith said the trip to South America most likely will focus on helping children.

Registration for the race is $20 for walkers and $25 for runners. The top three runners in the race will receive prizes.

The race registration opens at 7 a.m., and the race begins at 8 a.m.

From 3-6 p.m., food and entertainment will come together at the picnic in the Greers Ferry City Park. The Imagine That Band will perform as residents and visitors sit back and eat burgers, hot dogs, soda and snacks sold by local Boy Scouts.

“They’re trying to make money to repair their hut,” Wanat said of the Boy Scouts. Last winter, the pipes froze in the Scout hut. When they thawed, the water overflowed in the hut, ruining the floors.

To round out the evening, a Lighted Boat Parade will make its way to Devils Fork, Narrows, Hurricane Bay and Lacey’s Narrows Marina. Boats will line up at 8 p.m. at the Devils Fork Fishing Tournament Center, and Wanat said entries will be accepted the day of the event.

“We’ll let people come and put their boats in at the last minute,” she said.

Cash prizes will be awarded in the lighted-boat parade. Local government officials will judge the parade, and the owners of the best decorated boats will win $200 for first place, $100 for second place and $50 for third place. The entry fee for the boat parade is $20.
