Personal Space

Emily Wood

Where I live: I live in the Heights neighborhood of Little Rock with my husband, Jeremiah, and our mini Australian shepherd, Turk. We have lived here for six years.

Occupation: I am a professional artist. I am also chairman of the painting and drawing department and a painting instructor at the Arkansas Arts Center Museum School.

My favorite space: My studio.

Why? It is where I do my favorite thing -- painting, drawing, making art. It has plenty of natural light because of the windows on three walls of the room, and I can get paint on the tile floor and not feel bad about it. Also, the deck is attached to it so I can go outside if I need to make really big messes or paint when the weather is nice. My studio is relatively small and it's more "littered" than "decorated" with sketches, paintings, postcards and any kind of inspirational paraphernalia. Some are my own and some are by other artists. I probably spend 20 hours or so in my studio. I also work some in the painting studio at the Museum School. My studio is where Turk sleeps and eats here so naturally his hair tries to make its way into my paintings.

If I could make one change to improve this space, I would: Enlarge it to accommodate a big table and install flat files to store works of art on paper.
