Style: Cast of characters

Doctor Who, Dr. Doom and the Alien mingled among cat-eared Anime characters, black-lipped Goth girls, steampunkers, Batman and the late King Joffrey of Game of Thrones, Ron Wolfe writes in Tuesday's Style section.

The occasion was CALS Con, a comics and science fiction convention at the Central Arkansas Library System’s Main Library in downtown Little Rock. The May 31 event was billed as a one-day “celebration of all things nerdy,” and those things included costumes. Store-bought, hand-crafted, pieced together from scraps of fabric and flea-market finds: costumes of all kinds.

In this setting, the word for dressing up as a fantasy figure is “cosplay,” a mash-up combination of “costume” and “play.” Little Rock’s turnout was part of a national and worldwide trend among fans of far-out books, comics, movies and video games.
