Police: Gunman kills student, injures teacher in Oregon school shooting

TROUTDALE, Ore. — Police in Oregon said Tuesday a lone gunman fatally shot a student and injured a teacher at a high school near Portland.

The Multnomah County sheriff's office said there were reports of shots fired about 8 a.m. at Reynolds High School in Troutdale.

The shooter also is dead and the situation is stabilized, authorities said.

Troutdale Police Chief Scott Anderson said the teacher suffered non-life threatening injures and was treated at the scene.

Anderson said Tuesday authorities have tentatively identified the gunman, but aren't ready at this point to release the name. They are in the process of notifying the family of the gunman and student who was killed.

Students said they were told over the intercom there was a lockdown and to quietly go to their classrooms. They were later evacuated from the school, hands on their heads, to be reunited with their parents in a supermarket parking lot.

During the evacuation, another unrelated gun was found and one person was taken into custody.

The shooting follows a spate of recent attacks at or near school campuses.

On June 5, a 19-year-old man was killed and two other people wounded when a gunman opened fire in a building at Seattle Pacific University.

Troutdale is a small city of about 15,000 near the Columbia River, about 16 miles east of downtown Portland.
