Parts of Arkansas are under a slight risk for severe weather as thunderstorms move into the region Thursday, the National Weather Service said.

All but roughly the northern third of Arkansas is under the slight risk for storms that could produce damaging wind and hail, the weather service said.

The storms are expected to start in the west before moving eastward across the state into Thursday night.

The weather service's Storm Prediction Center puts the risk for damaging wind and hail at 15 percent for most of the area that could see severe weather and 30 percent for far southwest Arkansas. The risk of tornadoes is pegged at 5 percent for the state's southwest corner and just 2 percent for some points north and east of there.

The storms are expected to end by Friday morning.
