HATTIESBURG, Miss. — The former director of the state Department of Marine Resources will be sentenced Monday in federal court in Hattiesburg.
The Sun Herald reports the attorney for Bill Walker has asked U.S. District Keith Starrett for leniency. Walker faces up to 60 months in prison.
Walker's attorney says in the motion filed Friday that Walker doesn't have any prior record and Walker pleaded guilty to a non-violent crime.
Walker pleaded guilty in February to conspiring to defraud the federal government.
Walker admitted he conspired with his son, Scott, and a former MDMR manager to spend $210,000 in federal money granted through DMR on property Scott Walker owned.
Walker headed the state agency responsible for conserving coastal resources from 2002 until he was fired in January 2013.
