A Benton man was killed Sunday after his pickup veered out of control, overturned and hit a tree in Garland County, authorities said.

Gary Weems, 59, was driving about 3:40 p.m. east on U.S. 270 near the Crystal Springs community when he lost control of his 1999 Ford F-250 and it went off the highway, according to an Arkansas State Police report.

The pickup then overturned and hit a tree. Weems died at the scene.

It wasn't clear what caused the truck to veer from the road. Conditions at the time were described as clear and dry.

The death was the 175th traffic fatality in Arkansas so far this year, according to preliminary figures.
