Van Buren County to open breastfeeding resource site

CLINTON — An open house is planned to mark the opening of a new "milk depot" in Van Buren County, where nursing mothers can donate breast milk to babies in neonatal intensive care.

The Van Buren County Breastfeeding Resource Center is the second site in Arkansas to accept human milk donations. An open house is planned for Tuesday afternoon at the site in Clinton.

The center is working with the Mothers Milk Bank of North Texas, which screens women to become milk donors, pasteurizes the donor milk and distributes it to hospitals in Arkansas and across the region.

Mothers Milk Bank says the pasteurized breast milk is specifically processed to meet the needs of fragile and sick babies, regardless of a family's ability to pay.
