WASHINGTON -- Sens. John L. McClellan and J. William Fulbright voted against the Civil Rights Bill which cleared the Senate last night by 73-27. The vote climaxed 83 days of intensive debate, during which the two Arkansas senators joined 17 of their Southern colleagues in staging the longest filibuster in the history of the Senate against the bill. McClellan branded passage of the measure a threat to the "personal liberties and individual freedom" of all citizens of this nation.

• Memorial Hospital, North Little Rock's only medical facility, might soon be renamed Baptist Medical Center/North Little Rock. "The name will further aide the public and the patients in knowing the quality of care in North Little Rock is equal to or surpasses hospitals in Little Rock," Harrison M. Dean, senior vice president and administrator of Memorial Hospital, said Monday. Dean said that Baptist Medical System, which administers the hospital, has requested the name change, which must be approved by the city. He said the new name "would convey to the public our capabilities because we are truly a medical center." The 27-year-old hospital is owned by North Little Rock and has been managed by Baptist Medical System under a long-termed lease agreement. That lease expires in 2053.

• Despite being honored as a national health "hero" at a recent obesity summit, Gov. Mike Huckabee opposes restricting vending machine use in middle and high schools without first having scientific evidence linking vending machines to weight gain. He said school health standards shouldn't be based on "assumption." "There are no studies that I know that clearly say if a kid has access to a soda machine that he's going to be fatter than the one who doesn't have access," he said. Officials pushing for the standards say it's disingenuous for Huckabee to oppose these measures based on a lack of research. "I think it's really pretty much a basic that candy bars and sugar colas are not conducive to good health," said Rep. Jay Bradford, D-White Hall.
