Seismic work to require I-40 lane closures on bridge to Memphis

Bridge work will require Interstate 40 lane closures on the Hernando DeSoto Bridge in Memphis and West Memphis later this month, officials said.

Crews with the Tennessee Department of Transportation will move an electronic message board and inspect the Mississippi River Bridge between Memphis and West Memphis. This work will affect I-40 eastbound and westbound traffic between the bridge and the Arkansas Highway Police weigh station at mile marker 199.

The westbound lanes of the bridge will be closed from 5:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on June 29 for crews to remove the electronic message board. A seismic expansion joint will be installed at the joint of the bridge abutment, and a detour will be posted.

Westbound traffic will use Danny Thomas Boulevard to Crump Boulevard in order to cross the Mississippi River on Interstate 55.

The inside east and westbound lanes across the bridge will be closed June 30 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to remove the barrier rail that separates the lanes. This is the first of many closures that will occur along the bridge this year, Fred Stephenson with TRC Engineering Services said.

TRC Engineering Services is in charge of the bridge work, Stephenson said.
