PINE BLUFF — Arkansas prison officials say a convicted murderer who escaped custody stole a shotgun from a house on prison grounds.

The search continues Tuesday for Timothy Buffington, who's been missing since Saturday. Buffington had trusty status at the Pine Bluff Unit that allowed him to do work without constant supervision.

Arkansas Department of Correction spokesman Shea Wilson said a preliminary investigation shows that Buffington broke into a safe room in the house, where he had been doing yard work and janitorial work. She said Buffington confronted a woman who lives at the house, but she was able to get away and run to a nearby prison for help.

Buffington is described as white, 5 feet 6 inches tall and 182 pounds, with a shaved head.
