47-year-old Timothy Buffington, a trusty inmate assigned to the Pine Bluff Unit, left his work assignment Saturday evening. Wilson says authorities are searching for Buffington in the area of Princeton Pike in Pine Bluff.

PINE BLUFF — Arkansas prison officials say a convicted murderer who escaped custody stole a shotgun from a house on prison grounds.

The search continues Tuesday for Timothy Buffington, who's been missing since Saturday. Buffington had trusty status at the Pine Bluff Unit that allowed him to do work without constant supervision.

Arkansas Department of Correction spokesman Shea Wilson said a preliminary investigation shows that Buffington broke into a safe room in the house, where he had been doing yard work and janitorial work. She said Buffington confronted a woman who lives at the house, but she was able to get away and run to a nearby prison for help.

Buffington is described as white, 5 feet 6 inches tall and 182 pounds, with a shaved head.

Apparently not being the brightest crayon in the box, can someone please explain to me why a convicted murderer is given trustee privileges with limited supervision? I understand how it is earned, just wondering why in this case.

I was wondering the same thing. He should have been on Death Row instead of minimum security.

So he was a yard boy for someone. So the person he stole the gun from has to be high up! I bet the house was unlocked on the prison ground and the inmate just walked in and took what he wanted and left. When was the last count conducted on the house boys and yard boys?
