Garland County wreck kills 1, injures 4

A Texas man was killed and four other people were injured Tuesday night in Garland County after a driver struck two vehicles that had stopped on the side of the road, according to an Arkansas State Police report.

The accident occurred shortly after 7 p.m. on U.S. 70, just east of Arkansas 128, where two vehicles had stopped. A driver heading east on U.S. 70 fishtailed and struck the vehicles, killing 58-year-old Scott Burnham of Fort Worth and injuring four others, the report states.

Burnham and another victim were standing outside the vehicles at the time of the crash, according to state police. The driver who struck them was not injured, the report states.

Authorities said road conditions were clear and dry at the time of the accident. The driver told police that he didn't see the vehicles, and traffic prohibited him from changing lanes in time to avoid the collision.

Burnham's death is the 196th fatality to occur on Arkansas roads so far in 2014, according to preliminary figures by state police.
