ALMA — A dedication ceremony is planned in western Arkansas for a new section of Interstate 49.

The Fort Chaffee Redevelopment Authority and the Alma Area Chamber of Commerce are celebrating the recent designation of I-49 for a stretch of highway from Alma to near Bella Vista. Local and state leaders plan to gather in Alma on Wednesday morning to mark the new I-49 sign going up in the area.

The ceremony will be held in a church parking lot overlooking the interstate.

A 6½ -mile section of the highway through Chaffee Crossing is scheduled to open in October. It will initially be designated Arkansas 549.

The highway will eventually link New Orleans and Canada by a four-lane highway. The longest unfinished stretch is the 185 miles from Fort Smith to Texarkana.
