Car hits stopped truck on I-40; Texan killed

A Texas man died Wednesday after the car he was riding in crashed into a truck stopped in traffic on Interstate 40 in St. Francis County, authorities said.

It happened about 3:35 p.m. as Anna M. Bryan, 82, of Whitney, Texas, drove a 2008 Ford Focus east on I-40, according to an Arkansas State Police report.

Police say the Focus failed to stop and hit a 2014 Freightliner that was stopped in traffic congestion near the Palestine exit.

Bryan was taken to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis for treatment of unspecified injuries. A passenger in the Focus, Dale E. Bryan, 83, of Whitney, Texas, died at the scene.

The truck driver was not hurt.

The death was one of two in traffic crashes in Arkansas on Wednesday, raising the number of fatalities in accidents so far this year to 198, according to preliminary figures.
