Arkansas Achievers

The University of Arkansas College of Education and Health Professions honored three alumni with awards at commencement exercises May 10.

Karen Jennings of San Antonio received the Outstanding Alumni Award in Health and Human Services. She graduated in 1972 with a bachelor's degree in education. She worked at AT&T and Southwestern Bell for more than 31 years and leads the human resources and corporate communications division as a senior executive vice president.

Anna Reed of Little Rock received the Outstanding Young Alumni Award. Reed graduated in 2004 with a bachelor's degree in communication disorders and earned a master's in speech pathology from the University of South Carolina. She is executive director of the nonprofit Bridge2Rwanda and co-founded the Bridge2Rwanda Scholars Program, which trains top Rwandan students to compete for international university scholarships.

Jerry Robbins of Ann Arbor, Mich., received the Outstanding Alumni Award in Education. He taught at the high school and college level and served as dean of colleges of education at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Georgia State University and Eastern Michigan University. He retired from Eastern Michigan in 2004.

Arkansas State University-Mountain Home has awarded the William and Helen L. Nelson Scholarship to 14 nursing students. The award is worth $1,500 for the academic year. The recipients are:

The North Little Rock Police, Fire and Emergency Services departments have named their 2013 employee award winners.

Robert Griffin, Chip Goree, John Alston, Paul Cantrell, John Desizlets, Robert Branch, Mark Tozer, Shane Madison, Phil Lowry, Rick Beaston, William Scott, Raul Dallas and Jacob House received the Police Team Achievement award.

Tom Latina and Kara Browning received the Team Achievement Award.

Tommy Norman and Judy Prince received Achievement Awards.

Larry Behnke and Julie Eckert received Leadership Awards.

Michael Gibbons received the Merit Award.

Karl Sorrells received the Chiefs Award.

Aaron Henderson received the Apprentice Firefighter of the Year Award.

Beau Buford received the Fire Service Educator of the Year Award.

Benny Mundy received the Fire Officer of the Year Award.

Jeff Jeffries received the Emergency Medical Firefighter of the Year Award.

Sean Mahany received the Firefighter of the Year Award.

Josh Cox received the Fire Chief's Award.

Mandy Denton received the Emergency Services Dispatcher of the Year Award.

Arkansas Achievers is an opportunity to give recognition to Arkansans for their achievements.

Civilian and military achievements are accepted.
