The hummingbirds are coming

By The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

This article was published June 27, 2014 at 10:13 a.m.

Four (4) is the number to remember for hummingbirds — as in 4-to-1, the ratio of water to sugar when making homemade nectar; and 1-to-4, the ratio of bleach to water in the solution used to clean their feeders.

Four is also the number of days a hummingbird feeder should go without being cleaned and refilled.

And then there is the fourth important “four” — July Fourth, the approximate date when ruby-throated hummingbirds begin their southward migration to Mexico and Central America.

For guidance on helping these tiny travelers prepare for their journey, check out Alyson Hoge’s comprehensive guide in Saturday’s HomeStyle section.
