Mount St. Mary's principal resigns after 5 years in job

The principal of Mount St. Mary Academy, an all-girl Catholic high school in Little Rock, resigned this week, but school officials said Thursday that they didn't know what led to her decision.

In a letter sent Monday to the school's Board of Directors and the parents of students, Diane Wolfe did not give a reason for leaving but said she does so with a heavy heart.

"It is with great sadness that I inform you of my resignation from Mount St. Mary Academy," Wolfe wrote in the letter. "It has been an honor and a privilege to serve this community for the past five years."

Wolfe's resignation will be effective Monday.

Mount St. Mary's spokesman Sarah Johnson said Thursday that Wolfe had not shared her reasons for resigning.

"The letter Monday just came quite unexpectedly," Johnson said. "Mount St. Mary's has always had a great appreciation for Diane's service, and we're sad she's leaving."

Assistant Principal Angela Collins will serve as interim principal until a replacement is hired. Johnson said the school's Board of Directors will meet this weekend to discuss Wolfe's resignation.

In an email to the board, faculty, staff members and parents, Mount St. Mary's President and Chief Executive Officer Karen Flake thanked Wolfe for her leadership. Excerpts from the email were included in a school news release.

"As a well-respected member of our team, Diane will be missed," Flake wrote. "We wish her the best of luck, and we thank you for your on-going support. Our entire staff at Mount St. Mary Academy will continue to provide an excellent education for our students in accordance with our mission."

Wolfe had served as principal of the school since 2009 and was a math teacher there between 2003 and 2006.
