Whirlpool given extension for testing devices

By The Associated Press

This article was published June 27, 2014 at 7:13 a.m.

FORT SMITH — Whirlpool Corp. is being given 30 extra days to install devices to test for toxic vapors in a Fort Smith neighborhood near the company's former plant that closed in June 2012.

The Times Record reported that Whirlpool asked the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality for 60 additional days because access to perform the monitoring had not been granted by some property owners. Department of Environmental Quality Hazardous Waste Division Chief Tammie Hynum told Whirlpool that it should document and submit all efforts it has made to secure access.

The testing is part of the company's plan to address soil and groundwater contamination.

The groundwater is contaminated with trichloroethylene, a chemical linked to increased cancer risks that was used at the plant as a degreasing solvent from the 1960s through the early 1980s.

Typical Fort Smith Politics, they are trying to squeeze blood out of Whirlpool, when in fact the Property that Fort Smith is selling at Chaffee Crossing, is contaminated 1,000 times more than the Whirlpool site is. The City of Fort Smith is trying to hide the Testing and storage of Agent Orange. Agent Orange has Killed Millions of People, it's the Deadliest Chemical known to Mankind! But because the City of Fort Smith wants to make a lot of money, they continue to hide the truth! does it also make the City a bunch of Murderers? I challenge any of the directors to prove it's not out there right now!
