Michael Warrick

Where I live: I live in the Kingwood neighborhood of west Little Rock with my wife, Judy, and our daughter, Annika, 18, and son, Phillip, 16.

Occupation: I am a sculptor and a member of the faculty in the department of art at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock since 1990.

My favorite space: My studio.

Why? It’s where I can listen to a variety of jazz music and create sculpture in bronze, steel, stone, clay and wood. It’s where I can respond to the world around me through my ideas. One season I may be modeling the figure or a portrait in clay that will be cast in bronze for a public art work. A few months later, I may be working on a stone series that depicts a seed from Botswana. During another season, I may be working in wood and colorful encaustic wax portraying different aspects of the subconscious. I often collaborate with other artists, designers or landscape architects to create monumental pieces of art for public places. The constant within my work is not so much the materials as it is the idea of what I am interested in bringing to the public’s eye for debate, appreciation and contemplation.

My studio is where my sculpture begins, develops and materializes. It’s my playground for creativity.

If I could make one change to improve the space I would: double its size.
