Saturday’s highlights
BRAZIL 1 (3), CHILE 1 (2)
Neymar pointed his right index finger in the air and formed the shape of a heart with his thumbs and fingers above his head Saturday after the 22-year-old striker slotted the winning penalty kick in Brazil’s dramatic shootout victory over Chile in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The score was tied 1-1 at the end of extra time, but Brazilian goalkeeper Julio Cesar stopped three attempts in the penalty-kick phase and Chile’s last penalty kick by Gonzalo Jara hit the post. It was a heart-stopper for Brazil, which breathed a collective sigh of relief after the country spent billions to host soccer’s marquee tournament. Brazil will face Colombia on Friday in Fortaleza.
COLOMBIA 2, URUGUAY 0
James Rodriguez scored one of the best goals of the tournament and then added a second to move Colombia into the quarterfinals for the first time with a victory over Uruguay on Saturday in Rio de Janeiro. Rodriguez gave his team the lead with a stunning long-range volley on the turn in the 28th minute and scored his second goal from close range shortly after the break as Colombia dominated a Uruguay team that sorely missed striker Luis Suarez, who was banned by soccer’s governing body for biting another player in a game earlier in the tournament. Rodriguez has scored five goals in the World Cup.
