JUNGMEYER AWARDS

CARTI salutes 20 survivors at scholarship presentation

How the time flies! On June 11, Dennis Jungmeyer celebrated the 17th awards ceremony for the scholarship that bears his name. A past Central Arkansas Radiation Therapy Institute Foundation board member, first lady Ginger Beebe said farewell to those in attendance, having hosted the annual midafternoon reception since 2007. Next year, assuming the award winners are presented in the same space, a new first lady will shake hands at the threshold.

She has welcomed a legion of heroes, honorees, philanthropists and civic-minded folks into her home over eight years, Beebe said, "and I always say, 'Welcome to your home, the people's home.'"

"But you're special," she continued, "and you're special because I know what CARTI does for so many people. ... I saw firsthand how CARTI fights not just for us, but with us. They were like our family."

The CARTI Kids Dennis Jungmeyer Scholarships went to 20 pediatric cancer survivors this year. Each is $2,500 and funded by the CARTI Foundation, All That Jazz (Oct. 5, 2014) and CARTI Kids Golf Classic (Oct. 6, 2014) fundraisers, and donors.

Perhaps the greatest achiever of the group, singled out for special recognition, is Tyler Robbins, who recently graduated from the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne with bachelor's degrees in computer science and software engineering and is pursuing a doctorate of philosophy in computer science.

He and his peers come from all over the state, including Paragould, Texarkana and Rogers.

"It's hard not to get a lump in your throat," Jungmeyer said.
