Elder elected into Texas League Hall of Fame

Former Arkansas Travelers radio broadcaster Jim Elder was among eight selected for the Texas League Hall of Fame last week, the league announced. Elder spent 34 seasons as the Travs’ broadcaster, 27 of which after the Travs moved to the Texas League in 1966. His final year was 1993, which ended ended a run of 23 consecutive seasons broadcasting Travs games. His first season with the team was in 1960, when he broadcasted games with Bud Campbell. When Campbell moved to another station in 1965, Elder took over and spent all but one season until 1993 broadcasting Travs games. The only interruption came in 1970 when he spent a season as the Travs’ concession manager. Elder’s 34 years remain the longest in Travs history. Elder also worked as sports anchor at KARK-TV, Channel 4 in the 1970s and as a statistician for Arkansas Razorbacks football games for almost three decades. He died at 73 in 1998. Other inductees were catcher Jim Bischoff, third and first baseman Mark Howie, former owner of the Jackson Mets J. Con Maloney, former owner of the Shreveport Captains Taylor Moore, pitcher Al Papai, outfielder Albie Pearson and pitcher Anthony Young.

Two Razorbacks participate at U.S. Championships

Arkansas’ Grace Heymsfield had a personal best in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the USA Championships in Sacramento, Calif., when she had a time of 9 minutes, 48.10 seconds to finish ninth. The time beat her previous mark of 9:48.34, a school record she ran at the 2013 SEC Championships in Columbia, Mo. Taylor Ellis-Watson finished seventh in the 400 dash in 51.78 seconds. It was a personal best after running a 51.92 in Friday night’s semifinal. Arkansas’ Stephanie Brown will run the 1,500 today after posting a time of 4:11.06 in Friday’s heat.

UCA’s Angles helps Europe win Palmer Cup

Central Arkansas’ Pep Angles earned a half-point Saturday and helped the European team win the Palmer Cup against the United States, 18 1/2-11 1/2, in Walton-on-the-Hill, England. Angles and Rico Hoey halved their match with the overall outcome already decided. Angles, from Barcelona, Spain, won the third hole and led for 10 of the next 12 holes before a birdie by Hoey tied the match at No. 14 and Angles evened it with a birdie at No. 17. Europe won 8 1/2 of the 10 available points on the final day. Europe has won the past two Palmer Cups in Europe. The United States leads the series 9-8-1.
