Pine Bluff man shoots himself in front of officers, dies

A man who shot himself in the chest after flagging down authorities in Pine Bluff has died, authorities said Tuesday.

The Pine Bluff Police Department said 65-year-old Glendale Head shortly before 4 p.m. flagged down two officers from his car, which was stopped at Dollarway Road and Moreland Street.

Head was sitting in the car with the door open as the officers approached it and asked whether he was all right. Head started to get up, and both officers drew their weapons when they noticed Head had a gun in his hand, according to a police report.

"Mr. Head turned the barrel towards his chest and fired one round," Officer Keith Wright wrote in the report. "Mr. Head was leaning against the door of the vehicle. I hollered put the gun on the ground, Mr. Head refused."

Officers took the gun away and called for an ambulance before moving Head onto the ground by his car, the report said.

"As we were placing Mr. Head on the ground he stated 'I need one more.'" Wright wrote, noting he asked Head what was wrong and why he shot himself. "He did not respond to any of my questions."

Head was taken to Jefferson Regional Medical Center and died a short time after the shooting.

Officer Richard Wegner said Tuesday that police are still unsure why Head turned the weapon on himself.
