Shaver to play Bootlegger Daze in Calico Rock

Billy Joe Shaver, an original “outlaw” from the days when country music included rebellious long haired musicians from Texas, will perform in a north Arkansas area that has only rarely hosted shows of any sort.

Shaver will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday as part of “Bootlegger Daze 2014” in the Calico Rock School Auditorium, 301 College St., Calico Rock.

Billy Don Burns, a singer-songwriter from just across the White River in Stone County, will join Shaver, an old musical pal from way back.

Shaver once got married in the state Capitol in a ceremony conducted by then Speaker of the House Robert Moore.

Four shows are booked into Stickyz Rock ’n’ Roll Chicken Shack this weekend, starting with The Spring Standards at 9 p.m. today. Cover charge is $7.

Friday’s 9 p.m. show will feature Cody Canada and The Departed. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 the day of the show. An opening act is yet to be named. Canada formerly led the band Cross Canadian Ragweed before he,well, departed.

Saturday the club will present central Arkansas five-man band War Chief, with opening acts Stephen Neeper & the Wild Hearts, along with The Fable & the Fury. The show begins at 9 p.m. Cover charge is $5.

Sunday, Har Mar Superstar will perform, starting at 8 p.m. Har Mar Superstar is the stage name of Minnesota native Sean Matthew Tillmann, a singer-songwriter known for performing his pop and rhythm and blues music while nearly nude.

Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 the day of the show.

Juanita’s will present a show by Sharon Corr on Saturday but instead of the club, Corr will perform in a new location, the nearby, new Ron Robinson Theater at the southwest corner of River Market and President Clinton avenues.

Tickets are $20 to the 8 p.m. show.

Corr, who plays violin, piano and guitar and sings, was one of four Corr siblings who founded the Irish band, The Corrs, active from 1990 to 2006. Andrea and Caroline Corr began raising children and the band went on hiatus. Sharon began a solo career and released her debut album Dream of You in 2010, and a follow-up, The Same Sun, in November.

Meanwhile, at Juanita’s itself, the club will have a 10 p.m. Saturday show headlined by Memphis rock band Artifas, along with three opening acts: Evacuate the City, Dead End Drive and Jessica Seven.

Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 the day of the show.

A 7 p.m. Sunday show at the club will feature Cumulus, with Sea of Echoes and other supporting acts. Cumulus is a Seattle-based trio formed by singer-songwriter-guitarist Alexandra Niedzialkowski.

This weekend the White Water Tavern will feature album release shows by a couple of musicians with new albums.

Adam Faucett will perform Friday night and Jesse Aycock will go on Saturday night. Faucett is from Little Rock; Aycock recorded his third album, Flowers & Wounds, in his hometown of Tulsa and mixed it in Jason Weinheimer’s Little Rock studio.

The shows begin at 9:30 p.m. Admission is $7 each night.

Five acts have been chosen to participate in the finals of the 2014 Arkansas Times Musicians Showcase at the Rev Room for a show Friday night. The contestants are Peckerwolf, John Willis, Mad Nomad, Duckstronaut and John Neal Rock ’n’ Roll. All five are from the Little Rock area.

Price of admission to the 8 p.m. show is $5 for those over 21, $10 for under 21.

On Saturday night, the club will present Keller Williams and More Than a Little for a 9 p.m. show as part of Williams’ “What the Funk Tour.”

Williams, who performs in a variety of genres, reports that the funky and soulful sound of More Than a Little “draws from the vast gospel/R&B scene in Richmond, Va.”

Tickets are $20 in advance, $22 at the door.

Maxine’s in Hot Springs will present three bands on Friday and Saturday nights this weekend.

The headline band Friday will be Kevin Seconds, from California, plus opening acts William Blackart and Mason Reed. Seconds and Blackart are folk-oriented, while Reed leans to the Americana end of the spectrum.

Saturday night, the headliner will be Kristen Cothron and the Darkside, a Nashville, Tenn., jazz/rock band, with opening acts Fox and the Bird and Valley Ray.

Cothron, a dropout from the Berklee College of Music, has a quirky sound that has been likened to those of Fiona Apple, The Pretenders, Zero 7 and Portishead. Fox and the Bird, a Dallas roots-rock trio, performs Americana-flamenco-folk music, according to the band’s hometown daily, the Dallas Morning News, while American Songwriter magazine compares the group to The Avett Brothers and The Decemberists. The band’s instruments include accordion, banjo, fiddle and ukulele.

The shows start at 9 p.m. Cover charge each night is $5.
