Deborah Baldwin

Where I live: I live in the Hillcrest neighborhood of Little Rock with my husband, Jim Metzger. We have two grown daughters.

Occupation: I wear several hats at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock: I am a member of the faculty in the Department of History (Latin America); the dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences; and the associate provost of the UALR Center for Arkansas History and Culture.

My favorite space: The sun porch on the east side of our 1920s home.

Why? I enjoy the sun porch because of the light, but also because it holds reminders of my travels in Mexico. My work first took me to Mexico in the 1970s. We have amassed humorous stories and tales of misadventures from these many trips that have enlivened our lives. One wall of the sun porch is covered with wooden and pottery masks while other spaces hold tapestries and wooden ornaments. We have a leather and wood table and four chairs that we tied together and then tied on top of our compact car. (Does anyone remember the Chevy Vega?) We then drove from Mexico back to our then-home in Phoenix. The bundle of furniture was nearly as big as the car!

If I could change one thing to improve this space, I would: Make it bigger so I could visit more markets and buy more treasures.
