Holder: Heroin an 'urgent public health crisis'

Attorney General Eric Holder speaks at the annual Attorneys General Winter Meeting in Washington on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014.

WASHINGTON — Attorney General Eric Holder is calling the increase in heroin-related deaths an "urgent public health crisis" and says first responders should carry with them an antidote to reverse the effects of an overdose.

In a video message released Monday, Holder says addiction to opiates and heroin is affecting Americans from "every background and walk of life."

The attorney general says the number of heroin overdose deaths rose by 45 percent between 2006 and 2010. He says federal law enforcement is working to address the problem but more work is needed on education and prevention.

He also encourages first responders to carry the drug naloxone, which can reverse a heroin overdose if administered quickly. At least 17 states and the District of Columbia allow naloxone to be distributed to the public.

Heroin use is an "urgent public health crisis"?

Really, is that the current TAX AND SPEND LIBERAL SPIN?

Health crisis? Is someone holding these people down and making them use heroin

Are they "catching" this addiction by shoppping at the mall?

How about this, don't do drugs and get a JOB!

"Americans from every background and walk of life" means that heroin is being used by plenty of otherwise successful people, not just down and out people who are out of work. You can thank our work in Afghanistan for the mountains of cheap heroin in this country. Poppies are the biggest cash crop in Afghanistan and we were afraid to do anything about it for fear of upsetting the locals.

Dudes - Does Obamacare cover naloxone? Dudes, if all first responders have to carry naloxone will that cost more money? Oh, wait a minute. I don't care because my healthcare is FREE anyway thanks to Obamacare making someone else pick up my premium payments. Silly me. But dude, do you think Holder owns any stock in the company that makes naloxone?????????
