U.S. 70 work suspended for basketball tournament, Oaklawn traffic

Work scheduled for U.S. 70 in Garland and Saline counties will be suspended to accommodate the crowds traveling to Hot Springs for weekend events, officials with the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department said in a statement Wednesday.

A high volume of drivers traveling to Hot Springs for the high school state basketball finals, which begin Thursday, and the weekend racing at Oaklawn Park have forced Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department officials to postpone work that would’ve forced the closure of one lane in each direction of U.S. 70 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

A new schedule will allow the work to restart Monday at 9 a.m. Crews in the area are set to perform geotechnical drilling and sampling to prepare for widening the highway.
