HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL Joyce named Mountain Home coach

David Joyce, a quarterback on Van Buren’s 1996 Class AAAA state championship, was named Mountain Home’s new coach Tuesday, Athletic Director Janet Wood said.

Joyce, a 1998 Van Buren graduate, replaces Benji Mahan, who left earlier this year to become wide receivers coach at Fayetteville.

Joyce spent the past two seasons as head coach at Colorado Springs (Colo.) Doherty High School. Wood said Doherty finished 8-3 last fall, adding the eight victories were more than the previous five years combined at the school.

“I’ve never talked with anybody more passionate about football,” Wood said. “He eats and breathes it.” - Robert Yates

Baker’s record-setting day carries ASU

Sophomore Austin Baker hit home runs in three consecutive innings, tying a school record for home runs in a game, and set a school record with 14 total bases as Arkansas State defeated Murray State 27-7 on Tuesday in Murray, Ky.

Baker went 5 for 6 with 5 RBI for the Red Wolves (8-8). The Red Wolves finished with 19 hits from eight different players and finished one run shy of the school record of 28 set against Memphis in 1992.

Two other school records were tied. Lucas Fedderson tied the record for most at-bats in a game, going 3 for 8 with 1 RBI. Tyler Hardle tied a school record with four walks. Hardle went 3 for 4 with 3 RBI.

UCA loses at home

Central Arkansas led Creighton 2-0 after three innings, but the Blue Jays scored 10 unanswered runs to claim a 10-2 victory over the Bears on Tuesday in Conway.

Creighton (7-5-1), which finished with 12 hits, scored three runs in the sixth inning and six in the eighth to put away the game. Central Arkansas (8-6) committed four errors, leading to four unearned runs.

The Bears managed only four hits off three Creighton pitchers. Freshman Joey Pinney got the only extra-base hit, a double in the sixth inning.
