Lane modification should ease I-40 traffic in West Memphis, officials say

Traveling through a construction zone on Interstate 40 in West Memphis should be smoother since a traffic-flow modification has been put in place, state highway officials say.

A news release from the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department states that the I-40 westbound lane near the Mound City exit has been expanded from one to two, starting after the Mississippi River bridge.

The outside lane is to be used only by drivers exiting at Mound City, according to the release. Other motorists may continue on I-40 using the inside lane. The construction project, scheduled to be completed before the end of 2014, is to rehabilitate and reconstruct six bridges on Interstates 40 and 55 in West Memphis, highway officials said in the release.

Drivers are asked to be cautious when traveling through the construction area.
