100 YEARS AGO March 14, 1914

New and authentic styles in suits, evening gowns, dresses, wraps, hats and all accessories were displayed on professional models in promenade and dances last night at the style show in the suit salon of the Gus Blass Dry Goods Company store. The living models exhibited handsome afternoon gowns and street dresses for summer wear. The display is the second of its kind ever presented in Little Rock.

50 YEARS AGO March 14, 1964

I.S. McClinton, president of the Arkansas (Negro) Democratic Voters Association, today released copies of telegrams he has sent to Sens. Fulbright and McClellan protesting the Southern filibuster of the House-passed civil rights bill. In the wires, McClinton said: “It is difficult to understand how men of your knowledge of the progress and failures of this country can filibuster against legislation designed to create privileges of freedom for all people. The conduct and behavior of Southern leadership have created an unfortunate image of America in the eyes of many foreign nations…” In regard to the message to the two senators, McClinton said he had telephoned “some of our leaders and heads and groups of their organizations” and they felt that should be done.

The Arkansas Razorbacks won’t play football in War Memorial Stadium if “necessary repairs” aren’t made to the aging facility, a spokesman for the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville said Monday. Frank Broyles, head athletic director of the school, issued a prepared statement Monday after reviewing a report by the State Building Services on the structural soundness of the stadium. “A potential dangerous situation does exist,” according to the report, released Monday by Bob Carver of Mena, chairman of the War Memorial Stadium Commission.

JONESBORO - Ask about alcohol here, and the opinions flow as freely as beer from a tap at the Eagles Lodge, one of the 12 establishments in this dry county that are permitted to sell alcohol. It’s becoming a near-annual debate in Craighead County, which twice in the past 60 years has voted down alcohol. Now, as the owners of a local restaurant prepare to appeal the denial of their bid for a private-club permit, the sides are squaring off again in the town that Newsweek dubbed “Fort God” for its proliferation of churches.
