Hope teenager arrested in girl's assault

A teen boy in Hope was arrested Saturday after he punched a female middle-school student Friday afternoon, according to a statement from the Hope Police Department.

About 2:30 p.m., police said, a 15-year-old male student at Yerger Middle School punched a 13-year-old female student on the side of her face in a school hallway, causing the girl to lose consciousness and to be taken to the Wadley Regional Medical Center emergency room for her injuries.

Kimberly Tomlin, assistant police chief, said the assault left the girl with "significant damage" to her jaw.

The police report states the boy was purportedly participating in a "knockout game," in which any student who repeats a predetermined word is to be "knocked out."

The boy was charged with second-degree battery and disorderly conduct, Tomlin said in the statement. He's being held at a juvenile facility pending his first court appearance.
